This is the real-life inspirational story of the Texas Western basketball team, who made history by fielding the first all-black starting line up in the 1966 NCAA national championship. The team are led by Don Haskins (Josh Lucas), who despite being a rookie coach and having come from a high-school girl's team, hopes to lead the team to glory with his passion and unwavering dedication. But beyond the excitement and action of the game, the issue of race underlies the film as the Texas team face the championship favourites - the all-white Kentucky Wildcats. Led by Adolph Rupp (Jon Voight), they see the black players as showboaters who have no place in the basketball league. Despite facing racism, bigotry and doubt in their ability, Haskins' determination, vision and the courage of his players enable them to break down years of barriers for black players and changed the future path of basketball.
